Welcome, math enthusiasts!
Are you ready to explore the fascinating world of lattice multiplication? It might sound like a fancy dessert or an intricate dance move, but it’s actually a fun and visual way to solve multiplication problems. Whether you're a parent helping with homework or a teacher introducing a new strategy in class, lattice multiplication is a powerful tool to make math easier and more engaging. Let’s dive into this mathematical journey—with a bit of fun along the way!
Lattice multiplication (also called the gelosia method) is a grid-based way of multiplying numbers. It dates back to medieval times and has been used in different cultures around the world. It turns multiplication into a step-by-step visual process, making it especially helpful for larger numbers.

Write one number along the top of the grid and the other along the side. Example: For 23 × 59, place 2 and 3 on top, and 5 and 9 on the side.
Multiply each digit from the top by each digit on the side.
Write the tens in the upper triangle and the ones in the lower triangle of each cell.
Add numbers diagonally starting from the bottom-right corner.
Carry over when needed just like in standard addition.
For 23 × 59:
Colorful grids, markers, and graph paper make learning more engaging and easier to understand.
Create a “lattice race” where students compete to complete grids correctly.
Make math meaningful with fun scenarios like dragons, treasure, or shopping adventures.
Let students walk through large floor grids to physically experience the steps.
Lattice multiplication is more than just a math strategy—it’s a visual, interactive, and confidence-building way to help students master multiplication. With the right approach, learning math can feel fun, creative, and even exciting. Happy teaching!
Lattice Multiplication Worksheets (25-page PDF, includes charts, practice pages, and answer keys) are available for classroom and home use to support step-by-step learning and practice.
